Washington, 19 December 2025 — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on Thailand to return to full implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement with Cambodia, underscoring Washington’s growing concern over the escalating violence along the Cambodia–Thailand border.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of State, Secretary Rubio held a telephone conversation on Friday with Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, during which he emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate tensions and prevent further deterioration of the security situation.

During the call, Secretary Rubio conveyed the United States’ deep concern regarding the ongoing hostilities along the border and stressed that immediate, concrete steps are required to reduce violence and stabilize the situation. He highlighted the importance of restraint and dialogue, noting that continued escalation risks further civilian harm and regional instability.

The U.S. Secretary of State further urged Thailand to take firm and proactive measures to calm the situation and to return without delay to honoring and implementing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, which provides a framework for peaceful dispute resolution between the two countries.

Washington’s message reflects increasing international pressure for a ceasefire and a diplomatic pathway forward, as global partners reiterate that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue, adherence to existing agreements, and respect for international law.
