UN Secretary-General Welcomes Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire, Praises ASEAN, US and China’s Mediation Efforts

New York, 27 December 2025 — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, describing it as a critical and positive step toward alleviating the suffering of civilians, halting ongoing hostilities, and fostering conditions conducive to the achievement of lasting peace along the shared border.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Secretary-General emphasized that the ceasefire represents an important opportunity to de-escalate tensions and prioritize the protection of civilians, who have borne the brunt of the recent violence.

He further expressed his appreciation to Malaysia, in its capacity as the current ASEAN Chair, as well as to China and the United States, for their constructive and coordinated efforts in supporting a peaceful resolution of the situation between the two neighboring countries.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed the United Nations’ readiness to support ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at sustaining peace, enhancing stability, and reinforcing confidence-building measures in the region, in close cooperation with ASEAN and relevant international partners.

The UN reiterated that continued restraint, dialogue, and adherence to agreed commitments remain essential to consolidating the ceasefire and advancing toward a durable and inclusive peace between Cambodia and Thailand.
