Anwar Condemns U.S. Military Seizure of Venezuelan Leadership, Calls for Immediate Release
Kuala Lumpur, 4 January 2026 — Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed grave concern over recent developments in Venezuela, condemning the seizure of the Venezuelan leader and his wife during what he described as a United States military operation of an unusual scope and nature.
In a statement issued today, Prime Minister Anwar stressed that such actions constitute a clear violation of international law and amount to an unlawful use of force against a sovereign state. He underscored that President Nicolás Maduro and his wife must be released without undue delay, warning that the forcible removal of a sitting head of government through external intervention sets a dangerous and destabilizing precedent.
The Malaysian Prime Minister cautioned that such actions erode fundamental restraints on the use of power between states and weaken the legal framework that underpins the international order. He emphasized that the political future of Venezuela must be determined solely by the Venezuelan people, free from external coercion or military interference.
Drawing on historical lessons, Prime Minister Anwar noted that abrupt leadership changes imposed through external force often result in greater instability and suffering, particularly in countries already facing prolonged economic hardship and deep social strain.
Malaysia, he reaffirmed, regards respect for international law, sovereignty, and non-interference as essential pillars of peaceful relations among states. He called on all parties to pursue constructive engagement, dialogue, and de-escalation as the most credible path toward protecting civilians and enabling the people of Venezuela to pursue their legitimate aspirations without further harm.
