KAMPONG THOM, 14 January 2026 — U.S.-based biomedical research company Charles River Laboratories will invest more than $500 million in Cambodia through the acquisition of K.F. (Cambodia) Ltd, a firm operating crab-eating macaque breeding facilities in Kampong Thom province, Cambodian authorities said on Tuesday.

The investment is aimed at expanding the breeding of research animals for medical and biological research, with exports intended for international markets, according to official statements.

Cambodian authorities said the project would operate under strict national and international regulations, including ethical and professional standards governing the breeding and export of animals for scientific research.

Cambodia currently has 5 licensed companies operating in 6 provinces, including Phnom Penh, Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, Pursat and Kamong Chhnang, the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Government data show that more than 100,000 macaques were held in regulated breeding facilities in 2024, with over 10,000 animals exported for research purposes. Nearly 100,000 macaques have been exported since 2000, authorities said, all for use in medical and biological research.

Officials said the investment reflects growing U.S. investor confidence in Cambodia. The United States remains Cambodia’s largest export market, with Cambodian exports to the U.S. rising 28.5% in 2025 to $12.7 billion, accounting for about 41% of total exports, according to government figures.
