Cambodia, Canada Discuss Trade Growth as Bilateral Commerce Tops $1 Billion
PHNOM PENH, Jan 16, 2026 — Cambodia and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic, trade and investment cooperation, senior officials said after talks in Phnom Penh.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Aun Pornmoniroth met Canadian Ambassador Christian DesRoches on Wednesday, welcoming Canada’s decision to reopen its embassy in Phnom Penh and thanking Ottawa for long-standing development assistance.
Canada has provided about $207 million in grants to Cambodia since 1992, supporting sectors including education, health, agriculture, energy, food security, demining, governance and gender equality, the Cambodian finance ministry said.
Both sides expressed optimism over Cambodia’s long-term economic and social development and noted growing bilateral engagement at bilateral, ASEAN and international levels, particularly in trade and investment.
Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Canada exceeded $1 billion in 2025, up about 15% from the previous year, officials said, adding that Phnom Penh is encouraging greater Canadian investment.
The two sides said they would explore agreements on investment promotion and protection, double taxation avoidance, and support negotiations on a Canada–ASEAN free trade agreement.
