Thaksin’s parole eligibility nears amid Thailand political tensions
BANGKOK, Jan 20, 2026 — Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will become eligible for parole consideration on May 8, after serving two-thirds of his prison sentence, his lawyer said on Monday. Thaksin, a dominant yet polarising figure in Thai politics whose conflicts with the military-backed establishment and the monarchy reshaped the country for two decades, has been jailed for more than four months following his return from exile.
His family said he has adjusted to prison life and has urged only that any parole decision follow legal procedures.
