Cambodia Defense Minister Hosts U.S. Military Chief at Ream Naval Base
PHNOM PENH, Jan 26, 2026 — Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Seiha on Monday met Samuel Paparo, commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, at Ream Naval Base, the defence ministry said.
The courtesy call and working meeting took place during Paparo’s official visit to Cambodia, which coincided with the arrival of a U.S. naval vessel at Ream as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the Cambodian and U.S. navies.
Earlier on Monday, Paparo also paid a courtesy call on Hun Manet, according to the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh.
The embassy said the meetings focused on Cambodia–U.S. defence relations, ways to deepen bilateral ties, and support for regional stability. Discussions centred on dialogue, mutual trust and security in the region, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Paparo is also scheduled to host a reception aboard a U.S. naval vessel currently docked at Ream later on Monday.
Ream naval base has previously been a source of friction between Cambodia and the United States, amid U.S. concerns that Cambodia could allow China military access following redevelopment of the base. Phnom Penh has repeatedly denied the allegations.
Relations between Cambodia and the United States have shown signs of improvement since 2024, with U.S. warships returning to Cambodian waters after a hiatus of several years.
