Lee Jae-myung removes social media warning on online scams amid confusion
PHNOM PENH, Jan 30 — South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has deleted a social media post warning of a crackdown on online fraud after the message was widely misunderstood, according to a clarification published by the Phnom Penh Post.
The post, shared on X on Jan. 30 and later removed, referred to tougher enforcement against online scam networks, particularly Chinese criminal groups that recruit South Koreans to carry out fraud, the Phnom Penh Post said. The post is no longer accessible, with the link now displaying a message stating that the page does not exist.
According to the Phnom Penh Post, the deletion followed confusion over how the message was interpreted by audiences outside South Korea, with some readers misunderstanding the intent and scope of the warning.
The clarification stressed that the original post was aimed at addressing transnational online fraud and criminal syndicates, not at targeting any specific country or population. Online scam operations involving cross-border criminal networks have drawn heightened scrutiny across Asia in recent years, prompting governments to intensify enforcement and public warnings.
South Korea has been expanding cooperation with regional partners to combat cyber fraud, human trafficking and scam compounds operating across Southeast Asia.
