Thai Election Commission Orders Re-Vote in Phayao, Recounts in Seven Units
BANGKOK, Feb 17 — Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) has ordered a re-election in one polling unit in Phayao province and a recount in seven other locations following issues related to the Feb. 8 general election.
In a statement issued on Monday, the EC said a new vote would be held in Phayao’s Constituency 1, Polling Unit 6. The commission also ordered recounts in seven additional polling stations.
Separately, the EC said a new counting process for a referendum vote in Kanchanaburi province will take place on Feb. 22.
The announcement comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Feb. 8 election, after complaints and reports of irregularities in some areas. The commission has said it is reviewing petitions in accordance with electoral law.
The EC did not immediately provide details on the specific grounds for the re-election and recount orders.
The new voting and counting processes are expected to take place in the coming weeks.
