PHNOM PENH, March 1, 2026 — Cambodia has approved in principle the construction of a new international-standard airport in the northeastern province of Ratanakiri, a move aimed at boosting investment and tourism in the remote region, officials said on Saturday.

Prime Minister Hun Manet endorsed the project under a public–private partnership framework, according to provincial authorities.

The proposed airport will span approximately 1,905 hectares along National Road 76 in Lumphat district. The site lies between Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri and Stung Treng provinces — an area known for eco-tourism potential, agricultural development and cross-border trade.

Ratanakiri Governor Nhem Sam Oeun said the airport would enhance regional connectivity, reduce travel time to isolated destinations and support efforts to diversify Cambodia’s tourism sector beyond established hubs such as Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

The government has invited private investors to participate in the project, with feasibility and impact assessments currently underway. Authorities said that if no suitable private partner is secured, the state may proceed independently.

Construction is expected to take around three years once final approvals and financing arrangements are completed.
