Thai Election Dispute Deepens as Senator Challenges EC Senator Nanthana Nanthawaropas

BANGKOK, March 2, 2026 — A Thai senator on Saturday accused the Election Commission (EC) of using strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) to silence citizens who have questioned the integrity of the recent general election.

Speaking in parliament, Senator Nanthana Nanthawaropas,  said the commission should respond to public concerns rather than pursue legal action against individuals seeking to scrutinize the electoral process.

She cited alleged irregularities including unclear vote counting procedures, discrepancies between polling station tallies and officially reported results, delays in announcing outcomes, and concerns that QR codes and barcodes on ballot papers could compromise ballot secrecy.

Nanthana said the EC had filed complaints against several individuals on serious charges carrying potential prison sentences ranging from six months to 10 years. She questioned whether such actions were intended to deter public oversight of the election’s transparency and constitutionality.

The senator also criticized the EC for opposing a planned mock election on March 4 aimed at testing whether ballot barcodes affect secrecy, arguing the commission should cooperate with independent scrutiny to build public confidence.

Meanwhile, lawyer Phattarapong Supakson, known as Lawyer Aun, said he was prepared to represent citizens facing legal action related to election monitoring. He has petitioned the Ombudsman to review the legality of the election process and said he would seek temporary measures to suspend newly certified members of parliament pending further examination.

The Election Commission has not yet publicly responded to the senator’s remarks.
