Cambodia Sees Rising Threat from “Might Makes Right” World Order
KAMPONG THOM, March 18, 2026 — Cambodia faces growing risks from a weakening global order where “might makes right” is increasingly prevailing over international law, the Permanent Deputy Prime Minister said.
Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth warned that the erosion of international legal frameworks and declining effectiveness of global institutions have created a dangerous transitional period in world affairs.
“In this situation, international law exists only in words — what can be called ‘jungle law,’ where the stronger side prevails,” he said during a government meeting in Kampong Thom province on Sunday.
Vissoth said Cambodia, as a small and developing country that relies on international law, is particularly vulnerable in such an environment.
He also pointed to border tensions with Thailand, describing what he called historical territorial ambitions and recent actions as a significant threat to Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The deputy prime minister further highlighted online scams and cybercrime as a growing challenge to national security and Cambodia’s international reputation, noting that the government has introduced stricter measures and legislation to combat such activities.
On global developments, Vissoth warned that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East could trigger an energy crisis, driving up oil prices, disrupting global supply chains, and increasing inflation — factors that could place additional pressure on Cambodia’s economy and livelihoods.
He urged greater national unity, resilience and self-reliance, calling on citizens and institutions to strengthen internal capacity and adapt to an increasingly uncertain global environment.
“We must be prepared to rely on ourselves and build resilience to withstand these challenges,” he said.
Cambodia has in recent months emphasized economic resilience and stability as it navigates external pressures including geopolitical tensions and global market volatility.
