Thousands Expected for Angkor Equinox Event in Siem Reap
SIEM REAP, March 19, 2026 — Cambodia is preparing to host the annual Angkor Equinox event at Angkor Wat from March 21 to 23, where thousands of visitors are expected to witness a rare solar alignment at the iconic temple complex.
The event marks the spring equinox, when the rising sun aligns almost perfectly with the central towers of Angkor Wat, creating a striking visual phenomenon that reflects the advanced astronomical knowledge of the ancient Khmer Empire.
Tourism and cultural authorities said the event is one of the most anticipated highlights of Cambodia’s cultural calendar, drawing both local and international visitors to Siem Reap province.
During the equinox sunrise, the sun appears directly above the temple’s central tower when viewed from the western entrance causeway, symbolizing the harmony between architecture, nature and cosmology.
Experts say the alignment demonstrates the sophisticated design and engineering of Angkor Wat, which was built in the 12th century under King Suryavarman II and is recognized as the largest religious monument in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Authorities have prepared logistical arrangements, including crowd management, security and visitor guidance, to accommodate the expected surge in tourists, accordinng to the official.
The Angkor Equinox event has increasingly become a key driver for Cambodia’s tourism sector, as the country seeks to promote its rich cultural heritage and attract more international visitors following global travel disruptions in recent years.
Officials are encouraging visitors to arrive early to witness the sunrise alignment, which typically occurs shortly after dawn and lasts only a few minutes.
Cambodia continues to position Angkor Wat not only as a historical landmark but also as a symbol of national identity and a centerpiece of its tourism industry.
