PHNOM PENH, March 30, 2026 — Cambodia is emerging not only as a user of technology but increasingly as a creator and exporter of homegrown innovations, a senior government official said, underscoring the country’s growing ambitions in science and digital development.

Speaking at the National Science, Technology and Innovation Day 2026, Hem Vanndy said Cambodia is shifting toward developing technologies that can be commercialised and used internationally.

“Cambodia is no longer just a country that uses technology — it is becoming a country that creates technology,” he said, pointing to locally developed innovations already being exported abroad.

The remarks highlight Cambodia’s broader push to strengthen its innovation ecosystem and move up the value chain, as the government seeks to position the country as a competitive player in the regional digital economy.

Officials say science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education will be key to sustaining this transformation, with authorities encouraging young people to develop skills that support innovation, productivity and economic resilience.

The three-day National Science, Technology and Innovation Day, held from March 26 to 28 in Phnom Penh, brought together government leaders, researchers, private sector representatives and development partners under the theme “Innovation for National Development.

The event featured exhibitions, policy discussions and national science awards aimed at promoting research capacity and fostering collaboration across sectors.

Analysts say Cambodia’s focus on innovation and technology development could help attract foreign investment, diversify the economy and enhance the country’s competitiveness on the global stage.
