Laos Warns of More Storms After Hail Damage Hits Thousands
VIENTIANE, March 31, 2026 — Lao authorities have warned of more severe weather, including thunderstorms, strong winds and possible hail, following a destructive storm that damaged thousands of homes in the capital.
The Lao Department of Meteorology and Hydrology said unstable weather conditions are expected to persist, raising the risk of lightning, heavy rain and hail in several areas across the country.
The alert comes days after a powerful hailstorm struck Sikhottabong district in Vientiane after Thai King’s offical visit, affecting 17 villages and damaging more than 5,000 homes. Schools, temples and other public buildings were also hit, while 53 vehicles were reported damaged. At least nine people were injured.
Authorities said emergency assistance is being delivered to affected families as recovery efforts continue.
Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith visited the impacted area and proposed relief measures, including waiving electricity and water bills for three months to support affected households.
Officials urged residents to remain vigilant, monitor weather updates and take precautions as further storms could hit in the coming days.
The extreme weather highlights growing concerns over seasonal volatility and its impact on infrastructure and communities in Laos.
