PHNOM PENH, April 1, 2026 — Cambodia’s acting head of state Hun Sen met with Takahashi Fumiaki to strengthen economic cooperation and promote increased Japanese investment in Cambodia.

The meeting, held at the Senate’s Peace Palace, focused on expanding trade and investment ties, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), seen as a key driver of Cambodia’s economic growth.

Hun Sen welcomed the Japanese delegation and praised the Japan-Cambodia Association for its role in attracting Japanese investors to Cambodia, highlighting its contribution to the country’s ongoing development.

Takahashi expressed appreciation for the meeting and commended Cambodia’s rapid and continuous development, noting that each visit reveals new progress and opportunities.

He emphasized Cambodia’s strong potential in SME investment and natural resources, adding that combining Cambodia’s resource advantages with Japan’s advanced technology could help create higher-value products for export markets.

Cambodian officials reiterated that SMEs remain central to national economic strategy, with Hun Sen stressing that promoting investment in this sector has long been a government priority to drive sustainable growth.

The meeting also underscored Japan’s continued role as a key development partner for Cambodia, contributing through investment, technical cooperation and development assistance.

The engagement reflects ongoing efforts by Phnom Penh to deepen economic ties with Japan and attract further foreign investment to support long-term growth.
