PHNOM PENH, April 4, 2026 — Cambodia has rejected as “fake news” a claim circulating on Thai social media alleging that an elite Cambodian military unit had entered Thailand to carry out covert operations.

A graphic shared by Cambodian authorities cited a post attributed to Veera Somkwamkid, described as a leader of a Thai extremist group, which alleged that bodyguard troops linked to former Prime Minister Hun Sen had infiltrated Bangkok to conduct espionage, sabotage and assassination activities.

The claim specifically referenced Cambodia’s Bodyguard Headquarters (BHQ), an elite unit tasked with protecting senior leaders.

Cambodian officials dismissed the allegation as entirely false, warning that such misinformation risks fueling unnecessary tension and misunderstanding between the two neighboring countries.

No evidence has been provided to support the claim, and there has been no confirmation from Thai authorities regarding any such incident.

The statement comes amid heightened sensitivity along the Cambodia–Thailand border, where both sides have recently exchanged statements over military movements and territorial issues.

Analysts say misinformation and politically charged narratives on social media can exacerbate already fragile situations, particularly when tied to security concerns.

Cambodia reiterated its commitment to stability and urged the public to rely on verified information, cautioning against the spread of unsubstantiated reports that could undermine regional peace.
