MANILA, April 14, 2026 — Southeast Asian foreign ministers have urged the United States and Iran to continue negotiations aimed at reaching a permanent resolution to their conflict, while calling for full and effective implementation of a ceasefire.

In a virtual meeting focused on the Middle East situation, ministers from the ASEAN stressed the need to restore safe and uninterrupted navigation and aviation, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz.

The bloc warned that ongoing tensions risk undermining regional stability, with particular concern over disruptions to energy supplies and food security across member states.

Foreign ministers highlighted the importance of prioritising energy security during the crisis, as Southeast Asian economies remain vulnerable to fluctuations in global oil and commodity markets.

Ma. Theresa Lazaro, speaking after the meeting, said ASEAN members reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional cooperation mechanisms, including engagement with China, Japan and South Korea, to mitigate risks of food shortages and rising prices.

She added that discussions also covered alternative sources of agricultural inputs and the potential establishment of an ASEAN emergency response communication system to better manage future crises.

As current chair of ASEAN, the Philippines is expected to host a leaders’ summit in May, where food security, energy stability and public safety will be key priorities.

The ministers reiterated the need for diplomacy and cooperation to prevent further escalation, as global supply chains remain sensitive to developments in the Gulf region.
