BANGKOK, April 24, 2026 — China urged Thailand on Friday to intensify its crackdown on online gambling and telecommunications fraud, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi saying stronger enforcement would help create a more favourable environment for bilateral relations.

The remarks came during talks in Bangkok between Wang and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, where both sides agreed to strengthen strategic alignment and expand cooperation across multiple sectors.

Wang said China hoped Thailand would step up efforts against cross-border scam operations and illegal online gambling networks, issues that have become a growing concern in regional relations.

“He expressed the hope that Thailand will intensify its efforts to crack down on online gambling and telecommunications fraud, creating a favorable environment for bilateral relations,” according to Xinhua News Agency.

Southeast Asia has become a major focus of anti-scam operations in recent years, with criminal syndicates accused of running online fraud centres, trafficking workers and laundering proceeds through regional financial channels.

Thailand has launched a series of raids and arrests targeting scam compounds, illegal call centres and foreign suspects linked to transnational fraud networks. Bangkok has also faced pressure from neighbouring governments and China to do more to dismantle operations affecting Chinese nationals.

Prime Minister Anutin said Thailand was ready to work closely with China to resolutely combat online gambling and telecom fraud, adding that cooperation would further strengthen friendship between the two countries.

Beyond security issues, the two sides discussed cooperation in infrastructure, agriculture and new energy. Wang described China as a reliable strategic partner for Thailand and said Beijing was ready to deepen mutual trust amid global uncertainty.

Anutin also thanked China for efforts to help ease tensions in the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute and said he hoped Beijing would continue to play a constructive role.

China has increasingly positioned itself as a regional mediator and security partner while pushing neighbouring countries to curb scam networks that often target Chinese citizens.
