Online Seller Confesses to Smuggling Thai Durian into Cambodia
BATTAMBANG, May 4, 2026 — A Cambodian woman has admitted importing around two tonnes of durian from Thailand in three separate shipments, police said, as authorities widen an investigation into cross-border fruit trade.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old online seller Pruen Saklén, told Battambang provincial police she had sourced the fruit from Thai suppliers between April and early May to fulfil customer orders, according to a report from the National Police.
She said the durians, totalling about 2,000 kilograms, were transported via the Kabin Buri border area before being forwarded by vehicle to buyers in Kampong Cham province. The seller added she was unaware of the specific logistics used to move the goods across the border, stating she only received and redistributed the shipments domestically.
Police confirmed the admission but said investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the supply chain, including cross-border traders and transport facilitators.
The case comes amid heightened scrutiny of informal trade flows along the Cambodia–Thailand border, particularly involving agricultural products, as authorities step up enforcement of import regulations.
Officials said further legal action will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
