Cambodia Plans Major Airport Expansion in Northeast Tourism Hub
RATANAKIRI, May 9, 2026 — Cambodian officials on Friday inspected the proposed site of a new airport project in the northeastern province of Ratanakiri, part of broader efforts to improve regional connectivity, tourism and investment, authorities said.
The inspection was led by Civil Aviation Secretary of State Teuk Saly and Ratanakiri Governor Nhem Samoeun, alongside provincial officials, technical experts and foreign advisers.
According to local authorities, the new airport is planned for Lumphat district and will cover more than 1,905 hectares.
Officials said the project is intended to strengthen transportation links to Cambodia’s northeastern provinces and support domestic and international trade, tourism and investment.
The remote northeastern region, known for its natural landscapes and indigenous communities, has long faced infrastructure and accessibility challenges that officials say have limited tourism growth and investor interest.
Authorities expect improved air connectivity to increase visitor arrivals and encourage greater economic activity in sectors including tourism, agriculture and mineral resources.
Cambodia has been accelerating aviation infrastructure development in recent years as part of broader economic modernization plans and efforts to diversify tourism beyond traditional destinations such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and coastal provinces.
Further details regarding construction timelines, financing arrangements and projected passenger capacity have not yet been officially disclosed.
