Hun Sen Highlights Food and Energy Potential in Azerbaijan Relations
PHNOM PENH, May 12, 2026 — Cambodia’s acting head of state Hun Sen called for deeper economic cooperation between Cambodia and Azerbaijan on Tuesday, saying the two countries could complement each other through food and energy trade.
Hun Sen made the remarks during a meeting in Phnom Penh with Elchin Amirbayov, special representative of the Azerbaijani president, according to the Cambodian’s Senate spokesperson Chea Thyrith.
The Cambodian leader welcomed the Azerbaijani delegation and described the visit as an important contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.
During the talks, Amirbayov praised Cambodia’s rapid socio-economic development and said relations between the two countries had continued to improve, while noting significant untapped potential for broader cooperation.
He highlighted political dialogue as an important foundation for strengthening ties and expressed interest in expanding cooperation in agriculture, tourism, trade and investment.
Hun Sen said Cambodia wanted economic and trade relations to match the strong political relationship between the two countries.
He noted that Azerbaijan possessed strong energy security due to its abundant energy resources, while Cambodia had significant food production capacity and strong food security potential.
“Azerbaijan can help provide energy security to Cambodia, while Cambodia can help supply food security to Azerbaijan,” Hun Sen said, according to the statement.
He said such cooperation could strengthen bilateral friendship while expanding trade and economic ties through complementary exchanges between the two countries.
The discussions also touched on opportunities to deepen investment and commercial cooperation as Cambodia seeks to diversify international economic partnerships and expand global trade links.
