Cambodia Calls for Diplomacy and International Law in Resolving Conflicts
UNITED NATIONS, May 26, 2026 — Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn has called for stronger respect for territorial integrity and peaceful dispute resolution amid growing global instability and armed conflicts.
Speaking during a high-level open debate of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, Prak Sokhonn said rising geopolitical tensions and international conflicts had reinforced the importance of diplomacy and adherence to international law as the foundation of global order.
“In an era marked by rising global turbulence, armed conflicts and geopolitical tensions, territorial integrity and the peaceful settlement of disputes must remain the bedrock of the international order,” he said in Cambodia’s national statement to the council.
The Cambodian foreign minister reaffirmed Cambodia’s “unwavering commitment” to the United Nations Charter and stressed that disputes should be resolved exclusively through dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law.
Drawing on Cambodia’s own historical experience, Prak Sokhonn said peaceful mechanisms remained essential for preventing escalation and restoring stability in conflict situations.
Before concluding his address, he expressed Cambodia’s appreciation to the international community for supporting the ceasefire and peaceful settlement efforts related to the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict.
Cambodia has repeatedly called for peaceful dialogue and international legal mechanisms following armed border clashes with Thailand in 2025 that displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians and heightened regional tensions.
The UN Security Council debate focused on international peace, security and the protection of territorial sovereignty amid ongoing global conflicts and geopolitical instability.
