TBONG KHMUM, May 27, 2026 — Prime Minister Hun Manet said Cambodia is prioritizing efforts to reduce imports of several key consumer products, particularly milk, instant noodles and sugar, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen domestic production and economic self-reliance.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of a rubber processing factory in Tbong Khmum province on Wednesday, Hun Manet said the government has identified those products as major import categories that Cambodia should increasingly produce locally.

The prime minister stressed that boosting domestic manufacturing would help retain more economic value inside the country, create jobs and strengthen agricultural and industrial supply chains.

Hun Manet said Cambodia possesses strong potential in agriculture and agro-industry, adding that the country should continue encouraging investment in food processing and manufacturing sectors capable of replacing imported goods.

The remarks came as the government continues promoting industrial diversification and attracting foreign investment into Cambodia’s manufacturing sector.

The premier also linked the strategy to broader economic resilience, saying reducing dependence on imported essentials would benefit both producers and consumers while supporting long-term national development goals.
