BANGKOK, June 2, 2026 — Thai police have launched an investigation after a grenade was discovered outside a bank branch in Bangkok’s Bang Khun Non district, prompting a security operation and the deployment of explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers.

Police said they received a report at approximately 7:30 a.m. that a suspicious object resembling an explosive device had been found near a bank branch on Bang Khun Non Road. Officers from Bang Khun Non Police Station responded alongside EOD specialists and immediately cordoned off the area as a precaution.

Authorities later identified the object as an MK 2 grenade that had been left among rubbish beside the roadside.

According to preliminary findings, refuse collectors conducting their routine morning duties discovered the object while sorting waste. After noticing it resembled a grenade, they alerted police.

A security guard at the bank told investigators that the location is regularly used as a temporary rubbish collection point before waste is removed each morning. By the time the guard arrived for work, police had already established a safety perimeter around the area.

EOD officers safely removed the grenade, completing the operation at around 9:00 a.m. No injuries or damage were reported.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations and interviewing potential witnesses to determine how the grenade came to be abandoned at the site.

Police believe the explosive may have been discarded by an individual attempting to avoid legal consequences, although authorities have not ruled out other possibilities. The investigation remains ongoing.
