Cambodia, Vietnam Agree on New Tourism Roadmap to Boost Visitor Flows
HANOI, June 9, 2026 — Cambodia and Vietnam have agreed on a series of joint initiatives aimed at increasing tourist arrivals, strengthening destination connectivity and expanding tourism cooperation between the two countries.
The agreements were reached during a bilateral meeting between Cambodian Tourism Minister Huot Hak and Vietnamese Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Lam Thi Phoung Thanh on June 8 in Hanoi, on the sidelines of Prime Minister Hun Manet’s official visit to Vietnam.
During the meeting, both ministers reviewed the implementation of the 2023 Cambodia-Vietnam tourism cooperation memorandum and agreed on five key areas of collaboration to deepen tourism ties and promote sustainable growth in the sector.
A major focus of the discussions was improving tourism connectivity by land, air and water. Both sides agreed to support the establishment of a maritime route linking Vietnam’s Phu Quoc International Port with Cambodia’s Kampot International Tourist Port. The two countries also discussed developing Mekong River cruise tourism connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, with the possibility of extending routes to Laos in the future.
The ministers also agreed to organize tourism promotion events in border provinces, including tourism investment forums, food tourism festivals and sports tourism activities, to encourage greater cross-border travel and economic cooperation.
To attract more international visitors, Cambodia and Vietnam will encourage private-sector collaboration in developing joint tourism packages linking major destinations in both countries. Particular emphasis will be placed on promoting secondary destinations to extend visitor stays and diversify tourism products.
The two sides further pledged to strengthen cooperation in tourism education and human resource development through training exchanges between tourism institutions and hospitality training centers in both countries.
In addition, Cambodia and Vietnam will facilitate familiarization trips for influencers, content creators and tourism businesses to explore tourism potential in both countries and help promote destinations to wider audiences.
To ensure effective implementation, both governments will establish technical working groups to monitor progress. Developments are expected to be reviewed during the first Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Tourism Ministers’ Meeting, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City (ITE-HCMC) in August 2026.
Officials expressed confidence that the new initiatives will contribute to stronger tourism growth, greater regional connectivity and increased people-to-people exchanges between Cambodia and Vietnam.
