Hun Manet Highlights Funan Techo Canal, Logistics Expansion in Talks with US Official
HANOI, June 10, 2026 — United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has praised the growing relationship between the United States and Cambodia, highlighting new opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.
The meeting took place on June 9 on the sidelines of the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi, where Landau paid a courtesy call on the Cambodian premier.
According to the Cambodian government, Landau expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of US-Cambodia relations and said both countries have significant opportunities to further strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors.
The senior US diplomat also welcomed the conclusion of the historic Open Skies Agreement between Cambodia and the United States, describing it as an important step that would help deepen bilateral ties and expand cooperation in the years ahead.
Landau further commended Cambodia for facilitating a favorable environment for American businesses to invest and expand operations in the Kingdom. He noted that US investments have contributed to Cambodia’s socio-economic development and described Cambodia as a country with strong tourism potential, citing its rich cultural heritage and globally recognized attractions.
For his part, Hun Manet welcomed the continued progress in Cambodia-US relations and reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The prime minister outlined a series of government policies aimed at supporting private-sector growth and ensuring a favorable business climate for both domestic and foreign investors. He also highlighted ongoing infrastructure and logistics development projects, including the expansion of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port and the construction of the Funan Techo Canal project, which he said would improve transportation efficiency, boost competitiveness, create jobs and support long-term economic growth.
The two leaders also exchanged views on combating transnational crime, particularly online scam operations. Hun Manet emphasized Cambodia’s firm commitment to working with international partners, including the United States, to eliminate cyber fraud networks operating in the region.
Landau reportedly welcomed Cambodia’s intensified crackdown on online scam syndicates and praised the government’s determination to address the issue.
During the discussions, Hun Manet also briefed the US official on recent developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border and reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border issues peacefully through international law and existing bilateral agreements.
The meeting reflects continued engagement between Phnom Penh and Washington as both countries seek to expand cooperation in trade, investment, security and regional affairs.
