Prix Versailles Honors Techo International Airport for Outstanding Architecture
PHNOM PENH, June 16, 2026 — Cambodia’s Techo International Airport has been recognized among the world’s most beautiful airports for 2026 in the prestigious Prix Versailles World Selection, placing the country alongside some of the most celebrated aviation and architectural projects worldwide.
The recognition highlights the airport’s architectural excellence, distinctive Khmer identity and successful integration of Cambodian culture into a modern international gateway.
Techo International Airport was selected alongside notable projects from the United States, Germany, China and India, reflecting its growing prominence on the global architectural stage.
Since 2015, the Prix Versailles Awards, announced annually at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, have recognized projects that combine architectural excellence with innovation, creativity, cultural heritage, environmental sustainability and positive social impact.
Commenting on this year’s selection, Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of Prix Versailles, noted that modern airports have evolved beyond simple transportation hubs and now serve as symbols of economic, cultural and social dynamism.
Previous airport winners recognized by Prix Versailles include Terminal 2 of Singapore’s Changi Airport and Terminal B of New York’s LaGuardia Airport, placing Cambodia’s newest international airport among globally renowned aviation landmarks.
Developed by OCIC, Techo International Airport represents one of Cambodia’s most significant infrastructure projects. The airport was designed by the internationally acclaimed British architectural firm Foster + Partners, which drew inspiration from Cambodia’s national flower, the Rumdoul, for its sweeping roof design.
The roof rises dramatically toward the center of the terminal, echoing the architectural forms of Cambodia’s Royal Palace and ancient temples. The structure also incorporates elements inspired by traditional Khmer weaving, creating an appearance reminiscent of woven bamboo and rattan craftsmanship.
The airport’s design emphasizes natural lighting and ventilation, helping reduce energy consumption during daylight hours. Green spaces are integrated throughout the passenger terminal, featuring Rumdoul trees and air-purifying plants that contribute to a welcoming and environmentally conscious atmosphere.
Natural light, lush landscaping, warm interior materials and Khmer artistic elements combine to create a calm and distinctive experience for travelers arriving in Cambodia.
The international recognition is expected to further enhance Cambodia’s reputation in global architecture and design circles while underscoring the country’s ambition to develop world-class infrastructure that strengthens connectivity and supports future economic growth.
The award also marks another milestone for OCIC and Cambodia as Techo International Airport prepares to become a key gateway connecting the Kingdom to regional and global destinations.
