Cambodia Accuses Thailand of Unilateral Land Survey Along Border
PHNOM PENH, June 24, 2026 – The Cambodian government has lodged a formal protest against what it described as Thailand’s continued violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, accusing Thai authorities of conducting a unilateral land survey and installing boundary markers along a disputed border area.
According to a press release issued by Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on 24 June, a Thai surveying team, accompanied by approximately 25 Thai nationals and nine vehicles, conducted a land survey and installed land-boundary markers between 18 and 22 June in the area of Chouk Chey Village, O’Bei Choan Commune, O’Chrov District, Banteay Meanchey Province, along the border segment between Boundary Pillars 46 and 47.
Cambodia said the activities violated Article 5 of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Survey and Demarcation of the Land Boundary, the 2003 Terms of Reference, and the agreed minutes of the Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) held on 22 October 2025.
The ministry also said the actions breached the de-escalation measures outlined in the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on 27 December 2025, under which both sides agreed to resume land survey and demarcation work through the JBC in accordance with existing bilateral agreements.
Cambodia said it does not recognise any boundary line or territorial claim established unilaterally by Thailand and stressed that the recent activities would not prejudice Cambodia’s legal rights or position regarding its international border.
The Cambodian government called on Thailand to immediately cease what it described as unlawful activities, refrain from further unilateral actions, and work to reduce tensions, foster mutual trust and preserve peace and good neighbourly relations along the border.
The ministry reiterated Cambodia’s position that international borders must not be altered through the use of force and reaffirmed its commitment to resolving all border disputes with Thailand peacefully and in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements.
