Chinese State Media Spotlights Hun Manet’s Online Scam Campaign
BEIJING, 1 July 2026 — Chinese state media has highlighted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s remarks addressing concerns among Chinese citizens over safety in Cambodia, focusing on the government’s intensified campaign against online scam operations.
Speaking during a meeting with Cambodia’s small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) community, Hun Manet reaffirmed that eliminating online scam networks remained a key government priority, describing them as part of a “black economy” that has damaged Cambodia’s international reputation. He said the crackdown was intended to improve safety for foreign investors and international tourists.
Hun Manet revealed that during a recent Cabinet meeting, National Committee for Tourism Development Chairman Thong Khon reported that many Chinese citizens had directly asked whether Cambodia was a safe destination.
Responding to those concerns, the prime minister said the question reflected the international community’s perception of Cambodia and acknowledged that the government must address those concerns to strengthen confidence among tourists and foreign investors.
He said authorities would continue enforcing strict measures against online scam operations so that Cambodia would be associated with tourism, investment and business opportunities rather than cyber fraud and security concerns.
Hun Manet also said Cambodia will host an international summit on combating online scams in the near future, adding that 30 countries have already confirmed their participation.
The remarks were published in both article and video formats by Cambodia’s Chinese-language CCI Times before being republished by several Chinese media outlets, including the state-affiliated China Overseas Chinese Network (Qiaowang), reaching Chinese audiences both in China and overseas.
