Hun Sen Coins ‘Football Geography’ to Describe Global Shift
PHNOM PENH, 2 July 2026 — Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen said the 2026 FIFA World Cup has demonstrated a major shift in what he described as the world’s “football geography,” arguing that success in football is no longer determined by a country’s wealth, population or geopolitical influence.
In a social media post published about an hour ago, Hun Sen contrasted “football geography” with geopolitical realities, saying football remains one of the few fields governed by genuine international standards where countries compete on equal terms.
Reflecting on the tournament, he said the growing presence and strong performances of teams from developing countries and nations with relatively small populations showed that football does not discriminate between rich and poor countries or between large and small populations.
Hun Sen noted that several teams from less affluent nations had eliminated or seriously challenged teams from wealthier countries, from the group stage through to the knockout rounds, demonstrating that traditional football powers can no longer take success for granted.
He predicted that, if current trends continue, it is only a matter of time before a developing country with a small population wins the FIFA World Cup.
Hun Sen added that he did not know whether anyone had previously used the term “football geography,” but said he believed new opportunities had arrived for developing nations to compete successfully on the world’s biggest football stage.
