PHNOM PENH, 14 July 2026 — Japan has reaffirmed its readiness to continue supporting efforts to peacefully resolve the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute and restore relations between the two neighbouring countries to normal, as outgoing Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi concluded his diplomatic mission in Cambodia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn received a farewell call from Ambassador Ueno on the afternoon of 13 July 2026 at the ministry in Phnom Penh.

During the meeting, Prak Sokhonn briefed the outgoing ambassador on the latest developments concerning the Cambodia-Thailand border situation.

The deputy prime minister underscored Cambodia’s adherence to the ceasefire agreement and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to resolving the border dispute peacefully in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements.

Prak Sokhonn also expressed Cambodia’s appreciation for Japan’s humanitarian assistance to Cambodian displaced persons living in border areas.

Ambassador Ueno reaffirmed that the Japanese government would continue to closely monitor developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

He also expressed Japan’s willingness and readiness to continue supporting efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution of the border dispute and help normalise relations between Cambodia and Thailand.

During the farewell meeting, Prak Sokhonn commended Ueno for his contributions to strengthening the Cambodia-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership throughout his diplomatic mission.

The two sides highlighted growing cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including politics, defence and security, trade, investment and education, as well as people-to-people exchanges.

Both Cambodia and Japan also reaffirmed their commitment to further expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening relations between the two countries.

Ueno concluded his diplomatic mission in Cambodia after serving as Japan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom.
