Japan Provides $3 Million Security Assistance to Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, 20 July 2026 — Japan has signed an agreement to provide 500 million yen (approximately $3 million) in Official Security Assistance (OSA) to Cambodia, supplying communications equipment for the Royal Cambodian Army and patrol boats for the Royal Cambodian Navy.

The agreement was signed and exchanged on 19 July by Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Tea Seiha, according to the Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh.

Under the OSA project, Japan will provide communications equipment to the Royal Cambodian Army to strengthen its operational capabilities, while the Royal Cambodian Navy will receive patrol boats to enhance its maritime operations.

The embassy said the assistance is intended to improve Cambodia’s security and deterrence capabilities while contributing to peace and stability in the international community.

The agreement marks a further expansion of security and defence cooperation between Japan and Cambodia, complementing the broader strategic partnership between the two countries.

Japan’s Official Security Assistance programme supports partner countries by providing non-lethal defence equipment and related assistance to strengthen security capacities and promote a stable, rules-based international order.

The embassy expressed hope that the project would bolster Cambodia’s ability to address security challenges and contribute to regional and international peace and stability.
