Chinese Defence Attaché did not make border arms remark attributed to him by Thai military: Sources

PHNOM PENH, 7 August 2026 — The Chinese Defence Attaché in Bangkok did not make the statement attributed to him by the Thai military regarding the use of Chinese-made military equipment along the Cambodia-Thailand border, according to a Cambodian official who said the information had been verified with the Chinese Embassy.

Instead, the Chinese side reaffirmed its sincere and firm commitment to promoting peace, dialogue and good-neighbourly relations between neighbouring countries.

The Cambodian official, who spoke on Friday after verifying the matter with the Chinese Embassy and other relevant parties, said the Thai military’s claim that China had told Cambodia that “Chinese-made military equipment must not be used in areas along the Thai-Cambodian border” was unfounded.

According to the official, the Chinese Assistant Defence Attaché in Bangkok did not make the remarks attributed to him by the Thai military.

Rather, the Chinese side used the meeting to reiterate Beijing’s sincere and firm commitment to advancing peace, dialogue and good-neighbourly relations among neighbouring countries.

The clarification came after Thai media outlet Khaosod English, citing the Royal Thai Army, reported on Thursday that China had allegedly conveyed to Cambodia that Chinese-made military equipment should not be used along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
