BANGKOK, 8 July 2026 — A 32-year-old American man died after jumping into a deep lake at a housing estate in Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan, on 7 July, following an apparent episode in which he allegedly caused extensive damage to a rented house valued at 22 million baht.

Police and emergency responders were called to the housing estate after reports of a foreign man behaving unusually and running from officers before jumping into the lake. Rescue divers later recovered his body from water reported to be more than 10 metres deep.

According to reports, the man, whose identity was not released by authorities, had rented a lakeside house for 35,000 baht per month and had been living there for approximately three months.

The homeowner said the 22-million-baht property had been extensively damaged overnight. Paint had allegedly been spread throughout both floors of the house and over sofas and other furniture.

The owner said they were shocked by the extent of the destruction, particularly because they had carefully selected the tenant before agreeing to rent him the property. The damage was discovered shortly before the fatal incident.

A security guard at the estate told investigators that the man had displayed unusual behaviour before entering the residential compound. According to the guard, he had rolled around on the road and repeatedly raised his hands while praying to God.

When patrol officers arrived at the scene, the man reportedly became frightened and ran from police before jumping into the estate’s lake.

Witnesses said nobody immediately entered the water because the lake was believed to be more than 10 metres deep. Rescue divers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation launched a search and recovered the man’s body after approximately 30 minutes.

The deceased’s 22-year-old girlfriend told police that they had been together for three years and that she had never previously seen him behave in such a manner. She believed the damage inside the house may have occurred while she was asleep.

During a search of the rented property and the man’s vehicle, investigators found two unused syringes on a car seat and unidentified white tablets inside a waist bag. Police have not confirmed whether the items were connected to the man’s behaviour or death.

Investigators from Bang Phli Police Station sent the body for a full post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death. Toxicology tests will also be conducted to determine whether drugs or other substances were present in his system.

Police are coordinating with the United States Embassy to complete the necessary procedures and contact the relevant parties.

Daily News reported that investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the man’s behaviour, the damage to the rented property and his subsequent death.
