AOT Inspects Agreed Boundary Pillar No. 72 in Cambodia’s Koh Kong
KOH KONG, Sep. 1, 2026 — The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) conducted a field observation mission at Boundary Pillar No. 72, an agreed boundary pillar between Cambodia and Thailand, in Koh Kong Province on Tuesday morning.
The mission took place at 8:37 a.m. and was coordinated by the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG). The AOT-KH delegation was led by its Head of Mission from the Philippines.
The field visit, according to Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, was intended to provide the ASEAN Observer Team with a comprehensive and direct understanding of the situation at the agreed boundary pillar between Cambodia and Thailand.
Cambodia said the mission also demonstrates the Royal Government’s continued position that border issues should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and bilateral mechanisms, in accordance with international law, existing bilateral agreements and the mandate of the Cambodia–Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC).
At the same time, Cambodia reiterated its firm and unyielding position on safeguarding the international boundary line between the two countries, which it said was inherited from the historical boundary delimitation process between Indo-China and Siam.
The Cambodian government stressed that its position is based on the principles of international law and the inviolability of frontiers (Uti Possidetis Juris), as well as relevant Franco-Siamese conventions and treaties, boundary delimitation protocols, official maps and records of boundary demarcation, the MOU 2000, the TOR 2003, and other agreements and documents previously agreed upon by both sides.
Cambodia said these legal and historical instruments provide the basis for resolving outstanding border disputes peacefully and achieving lasting peace between Cambodia and Thailand.
The latest AOT-KH field mission comes as Cambodia continues to emphasize peaceful dialogue, bilateral mechanisms and respect for international law in addressing border issues with Thailand.
