PHNOM PENH, June 2, 2026 — Cambodia facilitated a field mission for the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to the An Ses Border Checkpoint in Preah Vihear Province on Tuesday, as Phnom Penh renewed calls for the prompt resumption of border demarcation efforts with Thailand.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of National Defence, the Cambodian Liaison Group escorted the ASEAN Observer Team, led by its Head of Mission under the Philippine Chairmanship, to observe, verify and report on the situation in the An Ses border area in Choam Ksan District.

Cambodia said the area had previously been affected by incursions, the installation of barbed wire and the deployment of shipping containers by Thai military forces, actions which Phnom Penh says continue to prevent some Cambodian families from returning to their homes.

During the visit, the ASEAN Observer Team also reviewed compliance with stabilization measures and ceasefire-related commitments outlined in the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC), which came into effect following the 2025 border conflict.

The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence stated that the inspection underscored the importance of accelerating the work of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), particularly the demarcation of disputed sections of the border. Phnom Penh said such efforts are necessary to ensure that displaced residents can return safely, peacefully and with dignity.

The mission marked the latest in a series of ASEAN observer visits to border areas following the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand. Similar inspections have previously taken place in O’Smach and Boeung Trakuan, areas that remain sensitive following the 2025 clashes.

Cambodia reiterated its commitment to fully implementing the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the GBC, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, and other related agreements aimed at restoring stability and normalcy along the border.

The ASEAN Observer Team was established to monitor ceasefire implementation, promote transparency and help build confidence between the two neighboring countries as they continue efforts to peacefully resolve outstanding border issues.
