Cambodia Secures Approval to Export Jackfruit to China
BEIJING, 16 July 2026 — Cambodia has secured official approval to export fresh jackfruit to China after the two countries signed a sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) protocol, marking another milestone in expanding Cambodia’s agricultural exports to its largest trading partner.
The agreement was signed on 15 July during a bilateral meeting between Agriculture Minister Dith Tina and Sun Meijun, Minister of China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC).
Alongside the SPS protocol governing jackfruit exports, both sides also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in plant and animal quarantine, as well as the import and export of safe food products.
Dith Tina welcomed the continued progress in Cambodia-China agricultural trade cooperation, saying both countries have been working closely to accelerate registration procedures with GACC and complete the technical requirements needed to open China’s market to more Cambodian agricultural products.
The SPS protocol establishes the sanitary and phytosanitary standards that Cambodian jackfruit must meet before entering China. It covers production, harvesting, cleaning, processing, packaging and transportation requirements to ensure exported produce is free from pests, diseases and harmful chemical residues.
Without an SPS agreement, agricultural products cannot be officially exported to China, regardless of market demand, as each product must first receive approval through a dedicated protocol.
The signing of the SPS protocol and the broader cooperation agreement reflects both countries’ commitment to strengthening agricultural trade and expanding market access for Cambodian produce.
Officials said the agreements will help facilitate exports of more high-potential Cambodian agricultural products to China while ensuring compliance with food safety and phytosanitary standards, delivering mutual benefits for both countries.
