PHNOM PENH, 1 July 2026 — Cambodia is developing a new food tourism strategy aimed at using the country’s culinary heritage as a soft power tool to attract more domestic and international visitors, Tourism Minister Huot Hak said.

Speaking at a seminar on tourism diplomacy and food tourism on 30 June, Hak said the initiative seeks to gather input from government agencies and industry stakeholders to formulate a strategy that will strengthen Cambodia’s tourism competitiveness through its cuisine.

The seminar brought together around 250 participants, including representatives from government ministries, the Cambodia Tourism Board (CTB), the tourism, culture and arts working group under Prime Minister Hun Manet, private sector operators and international guests.

Hak said the tourism industry is entering a new phase where destinations compete not only through attractions but also by offering authentic and meaningful visitor experiences. Modern travellers increasingly seek opportunities to sample local cuisine, learn about history and culture, and experience local ways of life.

He said identifying signature national and regional dishes would be an important first step in advancing Cambodia’s food tourism strategy.

The minister described culinary tourism as an effective form of soft power that has helped many countries strengthen their international reputation, promote cultural identity, attract foreign visitors and investment, and support sustainable economic growth.

Hak also called for the development of innovative tourism products, including culinary trails and agri-food tourism experiences, to encourage longer visitor stays and higher tourism spending in local communities.

He stressed that efforts to promote Cambodian cuisine must preserve the authenticity of traditional flavours while raising food hygiene and safety standards. He added that the strategy would also help Cambodia prepare for major international events, including the 2026 Francophonie Summit, where the country plans to showcase Khmer cuisine to international delegates.
