Cambodia Updates Japan on Ceasefire Monitoring Along Thai Border
PHNOM PENH, June 3, 2026 — A senior Cambodian defence official briefed a Japanese Foreign Ministry representative on the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border and reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law and existing agreements.
Lieutenant General Rath Dararoth, Secretary of State at Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, met with Hayashi Teiji, Ambassador for Mekong Cooperation at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a working meeting in Phnom Penh on Wednesday.
According to Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, the two sides exchanged views on strengthening defence cooperation and expanding bilateral relations between Cambodia and Japan.
During the meeting, Rath Dararoth provided an update on developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border and reiterated Cambodia’s position that disputes should be settled through peaceful means, based on international law and existing bilateral agreements.
He also expressed appreciation for Japan’s participation in observation missions conducted by the Military Attachés Coordination Committee in Phnom Penh (MACPP), which have monitored compliance with and implementation of the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire arrangements.
For his part, Hayashi reaffirmed Japan’s support for efforts to resolve the Cambodia-Thailand dispute peacefully and to restore normal bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.
The meeting comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts by Cambodia to promote peaceful mechanisms for resolving disputes with Thailand, including recent initiatives based on international legal frameworks and dialogue.
