Cambodia Warns of Heavy Rain and Storms During 2026 Monsoon
PHNOM PENH, June 16, 2026 — Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has forecast normal to above-normal rainfall during the 2026 wet season, while warning of thunderstorms, strong winds and localized flooding in some parts of the country.
In a seasonal outlook released on Tuesday, the ministry said Cambodia is expected to remain under neutral El Niño conditions throughout the rainy season, while the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is also projected to stay in a neutral phase.
The ministry said overall rainfall during the wet season is likely to be close to or slightly above the long-term average, although precipitation distribution may vary across regions.
Temperatures are expected to range between 26 and 37 degrees Celsius during the season.
According to the forecast, the early and middle stages of the monsoon are expected to bring frequent rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Some low-lying areas and locations near mountainous regions could experience short-term flooding following periods of heavy rain.
Authorities urged provincial administrations, relevant agencies and the public to closely monitor official weather updates and prepare preventive measures to reduce risks associated with severe weather events.
Cambodia’s rainy season typically runs from May to October and is a crucial period for agriculture, which remains one of the country’s key economic sectors.
The ministry said it would continue monitoring regional and global weather patterns and provide updated forecasts as conditions evolve throughout the season.
