Cambodia’s Francophone Legacy Under Norodom Sihanouk Highlighted in New Book
PHNOM PENH, November 7, 2026 — The Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) has expressed its support for a new book examining the historical connection between the late King-Father Norodom Sihanouk and the Francophonie, highlighting Cambodia’s contribution to the French-speaking world and the legacy carried forward by the current King, Norodom Sihamoni.
In a statement dated November 3, 2026, Youk Chhang, Ambassador to the Cabinet of His Majesty the King of Cambodia, said DC-Cam was proud to support the publication of The King Father Norodom Sihanouk and the Francophonie, written by H.E. Julio A. Jeldres.
The book explores the history of the global Francophone community, bringing together countries and peoples connected by the French language. With King-Father Norodom Sihanouk’s administration as its central focus, it also examines the Francophone republics of Senegal, Tunisia and Niger, as well as the continuation of his Francophone legacy through his son, King Norodom Sihamoni.
Chhang emphasized the importance of historical research and documentation, arguing that meaningful historical explanations require careful thought, reliable facts and a commitment to understanding the past.
He said preserving history was essential to equipping younger generations with the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to address future challenges. With more than 30 years of experience in historical documentation, DC-Cam reaffirmed its commitment to this work.
The statement was accompanied by historical photographs from September 1966, during the state visit to Cambodia by French President General Charles de Gaulle and his wife, Madame Yvonne de Gaulle.
The photographs show General de Gaulle and Madame de Gaulle alongside Queen Sisowath Kossamak, Prince Norodom Sihanouk and Princess Norodom Monique Sihanouk. They are preserved in the collection of H.R.H. Prince Norodom Chakravuth and the Documentation Center of Cambodia’s Queen Mother Library.
