Cambodia’s MoD Denies Thai Claim of Border Grenade Fire
PHNOM PENH, Feb 24, 2026 — Cambodia on Tuesday denied Thai media reports alleging that its forces fired a 40mm grenade launcher round near a Thai patrol point along the disputed border in Preah Vihear province.
In a statement, Defence Ministry spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata “categorically denied” claims that Cambodian troops opened fire at 8:50 a.m. opposite the Koul Prambei, Chak Chreng area.
Thai military-linked pages and several Thai media outlets had reported that Cambodian forces fired a grenade toward a position near a Thai patrol base earlier in the day.
Cambodia said liaison teams from its 4th Military Region and Thailand’s 2nd Army Area made immediate contact after reports of explosions and gunfire on the Thai side. During those discussions, Cambodian officials informed their Thai counterparts that no Cambodian weapons had been fired, the statement said.
The Defence Ministry urged Thailand to refrain from disseminating what it described as false information that could increase tensions and misunderstandings.
Phnom Penh reiterated its commitment to fully implement agreements reached at the Dec. 27, 2025 special meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee and the Oct. 26, 2025 peace declaration between the two countries.
The ministry also called on the public and media outlets to rely on official sources for information related to the border situation.
There was no immediate response from Thai authorities to Cambodia’s denial.
Border tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbors have persisted in recent months despite a ceasefire agreement aimed at stabilizing the frontier.
