China Reaffirms Support for Cambodia’s Funan Techo Canal Project
PHNOM PENH, April 29, 2026 — China has reaffirmed its support for Cambodia’s planned Funan Techo canal, underscoring deepening bilateral ties following high-level talks between the two countries’ foreign ministers, according to an official statement.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed continued backing for the major water infrastructure project during a visit to Cambodia, where he met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, Cambodia’s foreign ministry said.
The Funan Techo canal, a flagship project aimed at enhancing inland waterway connectivity and economic development, forms part of broader cooperation between the two countries under their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to advancing joint initiatives, including the “Diamond Cooperation Framework” and key development corridors spanning industry, technology, agriculture and infrastructure.
China also voiced support for Cambodia’s development path and praised its growing role in regional and international affairs, while both countries pledged to strengthen cooperation in defence, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.
Cambodia reaffirmed its adherence to the One-China policy, while Beijing reiterated its support for Cambodia’s sovereignty and national interests.
The two ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues, including developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border, and pledged to continue cooperation within multilateral frameworks in line with international law.
The statement said China’s continued backing of the Funan Techo canal reflects its broader role in supporting Cambodia’s infrastructure ambitions and economic integration in the region.
