BANGKOK, April 26, 2026 — China’s embassy in Thailand issued a safety alert on Friday warning Chinese citizens to remain highly vigilant against scams luring people to the Thai-Myanmar border under false pretences.

The embassy said the warning followed recent cases in which Chinese nationals were enticed by promises of lucrative jobs or tour packages to travel to border areas, where they later became involved in illegal activities such as telecom fraud and online scams.

Some victims had faced physical confinement, violence and unlawful detention, seriously endangering their lives, personal safety and legal rights, the embassy said in a statement.

Chinese citizens visiting Thailand were urged to recognise the risks, take safety precautions and avoid becoming involved in unlawful activities.

As preventive measures, the embassy advised citizens not to trust advertisements circulated on social media, short-video platforms or messaging applications promoting “lucrative job offers”, “group travel invitations” or “zero-barrier overseas work opportunities”.

In emergencies, citizens were urged to prioritise their personal safety and contact local police or Chinese diplomatic missions in Thailand for assistance as soon as possible.

The embassy also warned that telecom fraud, online scams and related crimes carry severe penalties under Chinese law and the laws of relevant countries.

The Thai-Myanmar border region has come under increasing scrutiny over criminal compounds accused of trafficking victims and forcing them into cross-border scam operations.
