Fake MSG Network Uncovered in Bangkok
BANGKOK, April 17, 2026 — Thai authorities have dismantled a large counterfeit monosodium glutamate (MSG) and seasoning powder operation in Bangkok, seizing goods worth nearly 2 million baht and arresting seven suspects, officials said.
The joint operation by the Central Investigation Bureau and the Food and Drug Administration followed a three-month investigation that traced supply chains from provincial traders to a production site in Bang Khun Thian district.
Police said the network produced fake seasoning products imitating well-known brands, using substandard ingredients and packaging designed to deceive consumers.
Authorities seized more than 24,000 items, including thousands of packets of counterfeit MSG and seasoning powder, along with raw materials and manufacturing equipment.
Investigators said the operation expanded after the arrest of a suspect transporting counterfeit goods in Pathum Thani province, leading officers to a house where the products were being manufactured.
The fake goods had been distributed across local markets in Bangkok, particularly in Bang Khae and Nong Khaem districts.
Officials warned that counterfeit food products pose potential health risks and urged consumers to check product labels, registration numbers and sources before purchase.
The suspects face multiple charges related to counterfeiting and food safety violations, while authorities said further investigations are underway to identify any remaining networks.
The crackdown is part of broader efforts to combat counterfeit consumer goods and protect public health in Thailand.
