KAMPONG CHHNANG, May 29, 2026 — Senate President and Acting Head of State Hun Sen has announced that his grandchildren who reach eligible age will fulfill Cambodia’s military conscription requirements, stressing that the law must be applied equally to all citizens without exception.

Speaking during a meeting with provincial, district, commune and local officials in Kampong Chhnang province on Wednesday, Hun Sen said his family was prepared to comply with the Law on Military Obligation, which requires Cambodian men aged between 18 and 25 to perform military service. Women may participate on a voluntary basis.

The veteran leader emphasized that military service should be implemented fairly and uniformly, adding that none of his eligible grandchildren would seek exemption from the obligation.

His remarks come amid growing discussion over the implementation of Cambodia’s conscription law and broader efforts to strengthen national defense capabilities.

Beyond military service, Hun Sen urged local authorities nationwide to continue improving public services, maintaining social stability and addressing citizens’ concerns efficiently. He called on commune and district officials to remain committed to serving the public and delivering essential services promptly.

Hun Sen also highlighted the importance of infrastructure development, particularly a proposed road and bridge connection between Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Thom provinces. He said he had asked Chinese partners to consider supporting the project, which would improve transportation links around the Tonle Sap region and boost local livelihoods.

On governance issues, Hun Sen reminded officials that public servants are “faithful servants of the people” rather than their masters, warning against abuses of authority and urging faster resolution of land disputes through fair and effective mechanisms.

He further called for continued efforts to combat crime, drug trafficking and other social problems while maintaining support for frontline soldiers, disabled veterans and former combatants. Hun Sen also urged local authorities to strengthen protection of natural resources and prevent environmental destruction in their respective areas.

The comments underscore the government’s continued focus on national defense, infrastructure development and local governance reforms as Cambodia pursues long-term stability and economic growth.
