JAKARTA, April 15, 2026 — Indonesia and France have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the defence industry, following talks between their leaders in Paris, the Indonesian government said on Wednesday.

President Prabowo Subianto met Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace, where both sides discussed expanding strategic ties, including defence procurement and industrial collaboration.

In a statement, Jakarta said the agreement includes efforts to enhance Indonesia’s defence capabilities through cooperation with France, which it described as a key strategic partner in Europe.

The two countries also agreed to deepen cooperation in the energy sector, including the development of renewable energy, reflecting broader efforts to diversify economic and security partnerships.

The meeting comes amid Indonesia’s wider diplomatic push to strengthen ties with major global powers. Earlier this week, Prabowo met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, where discussions focused on energy, natural resources and industrial development.

Indonesia has also reached defence-related agreements with the United States, underscoring its multi-aligned foreign policy approach.

Analysts say Jakarta’s growing network of defence partnerships reflects its ambition to modernise its military while balancing relations across competing global powers.
