PHNOM PENH, April 30, 2026 — Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting de-escalation efforts along the Cambodia–Thailand border, following an incident in which Thai soldiers reportedly fired nine rounds during a visit by foreign military attachés.

The incident occurred on April 29 during an observation tour by the Military Attaché Corps in Phnom Penh (MACPP) to the O’Smach border area, where gunfire was reported despite an existing ceasefire agreement.

In a statement, the Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh said Tokyo would continue to work with relevant countries to promote de-escalation, including the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

“Japan will continue to make efforts to promote de-escalation of the situation, including the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, in coordination with relevant countries, and will continue to provide various forms of assistance,” the statement said.

The remarks came after Cambodian authorities reported that Thai forces fired multiple rounds, including from M79 and M16 weapons, during the visit, an incident Phnom Penh said contradicted the spirit of the ceasefire.

No casualties were reported, but the incident has raised concerns over stability along the border and the durability of existing agreements.

Japan’s statement underscores growing international attention on the situation, with calls for restraint and adherence to agreements aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the region.
