Myanmar Leader Pledges Closer Partnership With Cambodia
PHNOM PENH, April 24, 2026 — Myanmar President-elect Min Aung Hlaing has pledged to further strengthen and elevate bilateral cooperation with Cambodia, underscoring what he described as enduring ties between the two Southeast Asian nations.
In a letter addressed to Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, Min Aung Hlaing thanked the veteran leader for his congratulatory message following his election as president of Myanmar.
He said Cambodia remained an indispensable and important partner for Myanmar within ASEAN and praised the steady development of bilateral relations over the past seven decades since formal diplomatic ties were established.
“I am unwaveringly committed to further consolidating and elevating our mutually beneficial cooperation,” Min Aung Hlaing said in the message.
The letter described the relationship between the two countries as built on an enduring and unbreakable bond, reflecting shared interests in regional peace and stability.
Min Aung Hlaing also conveyed his best wishes for Hun Sen’s health and continued success, while expressing appreciation for the Cambodian leader’s support.
The exchange comes as Myanmar seeks to rebuild regional ties following years of political turmoil after the 2021 military takeover, which triggered conflict and strained relations with several ASEAN members.
Cambodia has maintained engagement with Myanmar throughout the crisis and has advocated dialogue under the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus framework.
Analysts say closer ties with Cambodia could help Naypyidaw secure stronger diplomatic backing within ASEAN as it seeks broader regional normalization.
